Lore

The Sundering, the five Wardens, and what's really underneath Kingdoms of Iron. Unlike the in-game Codex, nothing here is hidden: read ahead at your own pace.

The Sundering

"Kingdoms of Iron" was never just the name of a nation. Long ago, five Houses of an alliance bound something older than any of them: a being their own records can't agree on a name for: using a rite of iron and oath. The binding held for centuries. It also leaked.

The corruption seeped outward through five Seals, one per House, twisting each Seal's Warden first and their land and people after. What's left of the free world is whatever the leak hasn't reached yet, and a small band of adventurers now walks inward, Seal by Seal, breaking each Warden's hold.

Every region unlock in the game is a Seal failing. Freeing the land is real, but it also means there's one less thing standing between the world and whatever was bound at the center.

The Five Seals

Green PlainsLord Thornevald, Warden of the First SealOnce the Verdant Ward, shallowest and oldest of the five Seals. The Blight barely shows here, just a sickness in the wildlife, nothing more. Not yet, anyway.

Cinder WastesLord Pyrocles, Warden of the Fourth SealThe Ember Throne's Seal, where the Blight burns rather than rots. Unlike the other Houses, not everyone here fights it. The Flame Cultists welcome what it promises to remake.

The Wardens

Every region boss was, once, a person: sworn to guard the Seal they've since become part of.

Thornevald the Corrupted- Lord Thornevald, Warden of the First Seal

Before the thorns, before the rot in his voice, he was Lord Thornevald, first among the Five Wardens, and the one who volunteered to stand closest to the surface. "Kingdoms of Iron," his House called their alliance, after the rite that bound what they found beneath the world. He believed the binding would hold forever. He was the first to learn it wouldn't.

The Drowned King- King Aldric, Warden of the Second Seal

Aldric ruled the Drowned Vigil from a keep that no longer breaks the water's surface. When his Seal began to fail, his court's Tidewitches swore they could hold the marsh back with the old rites. They were wrong, and their king's own Rot Knights still stand their post, waiting on orders that will never come.

Isolde, Keeper of the Third Seal- Warden Isolde, Keeper of the Third Seal

Isolde made the hardest call of any of the Five: she couldn't stop the Blight from reaching her Seal, so she froze it instead, herself included. It wasn't containment, just a slower kind of losing. The ice held far longer than anyone expected. It was never going to hold forever.

Pyrocles the Ashlord- Lord Pyrocles, Warden of the Fourth Seal

The other Wardens fought the Blight. Pyrocles listened to it. By the time his House realized their lord had started calling the corruption a gift, the Ember Throne already belonged to it, and the Flame Cultists who still kneel to him believe, even now, that he's leading them somewhere better.

Zoroa, the Hollowed- Zoroa, Herald of the Sundered God

Long before there were Wardens, or Seals, or a rite called "Kingdoms of Iron," there was Zoroa, an archmage whose name appears in no House's founding records, because he was already gone by the time anyone wrote them. He found the thing beneath the world first, centuries before any House dug deep enough to stumble onto the ruins of what he'd left behind, and he didn't flee from what he found. He knelt. Whatever wore a human shape when he first crossed into the Hollow has been unmade by it since. Ages of devotion have left nothing recognizably human behind. He doesn't guard this Seal the way a Warden would. He's simply what's left standing between it and you.

The Sundered God

Zoroa was the last thing holding the binding together. Once he falls, there's nothing left standing between the world and what the five Houses spent their Seals containing.

The Sundered God

It was never a Warden. It's the thing the Wardens were sworn to hold. The Alliance's own records can't agree on what to call it: the House of the Green Ward wrote "Vael." The Drowned Vigil's oldest texts call it "the Deep Father." One Ember Throne fragment, half-burned, just says "the First Flame." "Kingdoms of Iron" was never the name of a nation. It was the name of the rite that bound this, and every Seal you've broken to get here was a piece of that binding coming undone. You freed five lands. You may also have finished what the corruption started.

The Sundered God's Reach

The thing bound at the center of the world doesn't wait quietly. Every so often, in the middle of an ordinary fight against an ordinary monster, it reaches out directly, not through a Warden, not through the Blight in a beast's eyes, but as a voice, offering something. Gold, an ease, a shortcut. It always asks for nothing in return except what it already has: a little more of you.

Accept enough of its offers and the corruption takes hold: you stop being able to fight at all, until you cleanse it. There's a Rite for that, and it works. It just isn't free, and it isn't instant, and the God is patient enough not to mind waiting for you to need it again.
